BELL — A $165,984 project to upgrade 55 bus shelters in the city will be completed in four to six months, according to Alex Fong, facilities manager.
The city actually has 57 shelters at 43 locations but the Los Angeles County Metropolitan Transportation Authority plans to replace shelters at two bus stops at Atlantic and Gage avenues, Fong said.
The City Council contracted with ShelterClean in the city of Orange, lower of two bidders at $77,335, for the work. Another $88,649 will be needed for paint and materials, Fong said.
The council approved the project last December, noting that the shelters were installed between 1980 and 2002 and some were in bad condition.
In fact, three will be replaced entirely under the plan.
Other work includes painting, repairing roofs, replacing solar lighting panels and installing trash receptacles.
Funding will come from Los Angeles County Proposition A transportation grants, Fong said, noting that $727,000 was available.
