BILL VAUGHAN’S TASTY CLIPS: Global Citizen Festival celebrates Mandela’s centennial

A spectacular array of entertainers, world leaders and private sector heroes are convening in Johannesburg, South Africa Dec. 2 for the Global Citizen Festival’s celebration of Nelson Mandela’s centennial.

Trevor Noah of “The Daily Show” will return to his homeland to host the event at FNB Stadium along with Danai Gurira (“Black Panther”), Oprah Winfrey, Naomi Campbell, Dave Chappelle, Tyler Perry, Gayle King, Bonang Matheba, Nomzamo Mbatha and Sir Bob Geldof of Live-Aid fame.

And if that wasn’t enough to get your attention, the festival’s performing artists include Beyoncé, Jay-Z, Usher, Ed Sheeran, Femi Kuti, Pharrell Williams and Coldplay’s Chris Martin, Eddie Vedder, Sho Madjozi, Tiwa Savage, Cassper Nyovest, Kacey Musgraves, D’banj, Wizkid and more to be announced.

The philanthropic mission, first conceived in 2012 with events in New York City, awards entrance to volunteers giving time to social issues with the purpose of enriching sustainable development and to end extreme poverty by 2030.

You’ll be able to participate by viewing the broadcast, led by Rev. Al Sharpton and Joy Reid on Dec. 2 from 6 to 9 p.m. here. It can also be heard on 150 U.S. radio stations and live streamed via the iHeartRadio app with “The Breakfast Club” anchor and author Charlamagne Tha God hosting.

CAUSE WORTHY: Black AIDS Institute Board Member Jussie Smollett (“Empire”) returns to host the group’s annual fundraising Heroes in the Struggle Gala Reception and awards Presentation with his sister, actor Jazz Smollett on Dec. 1 (World AIDS Day) at the California African American Museum.

This year’s honorees include actors Billy Porter (“Pose”); Wilson Cruz (“Star Trek: Discovery”); and Gabourey Sidibe (“Precious”); singer and advocate Ledisi; Atlanta-based physician, Dr. David Malebranche; and activist Gabriel Maldonado, executive director of TruEvolution in Riverside, with special tributes to Phill Wilson and Kenneth Reynolds.

TICKET WATCH: Two entertainers who have been missing in action have announced comeback tours with tickets going on sale Nov. 30.
