BILL VAUGHAN’S TASTY CLIPS: No ‘Family’ for Sledge sister

Social media was abuzz last weekend with word that beloved R&B group Sister Sledge was blocking their youngest sister Kathy Sledge from performing their hit “We Are Family” before the Pope in Philadelphia.

Tasty Clips found that, despite the snub, the group’s former lead singer did go to the papal visit festivities, was present at the concert and had a great time with her family and friends.

Don’t cry for her, though. Sledge continues to diversify by just coming off of the heels of a No. 2 Billboard dance/club music release, “Keep It Movin,” as well as a well-received Billie Holliday tribute show called “Brighter Side of Day.”

“It is always been a passion to explore and expand my interest in the jazz music community,” she acknowledged while revealing she’s about to sign a major production deal in the genre.

All that activity is in addition to embarking on a tour ironically titled “My Sisters and Me” with vocal powerhouses Deniece Williams, Cece Peniston and Karyn White.

With all said and done, Sledge was optimistic when asked about where things stand with her sibling combo.

“Like any family, there will be mending,” she said.  “Pray for our family.”

INDIE FILM ALERT: “East LA Interchange,” was the Audience Award Winner for Best Documentary at the Downtown Film Festival L.A., where it world premiered in July in front of a standing room only crowd.

Now, those turned away at the door and everybody else in L.A. can see the movie as the opening night film for the New Urbanism Film Festival on Oct. 8 at the ACME Theater and as the closing night film at the Highland Park Independent Film Festival on Oct. 10 at Highland Theaters.

This entertaining and informative crowd-pleasing follows the evolution of working-class, immigrant Los Angeles neighborhood Boyle Heights from multiethnic to now predominately Latino and a center of Mexican-American culture in the U.S. It features narration by Danny Trejo (“Machete”) and interviews with will.i.am (The Black Eyed Peas), Father Greg Boyle (Homeboy Industries) and Josefina López (“Real Women Have Curves”) as well as an original song by Raul Pacheco (Ozomatli).

TASTY UPDATE: Earlier this year, one of the original “Ghostbusters” actors, Ernie Hudson, told us that in the 20-plus years they’ve been talking about another sequel, he’d never seen a script or been in on any discussions.

“I think they just assume they know they can get Ernie Hudson and they’re right,” he confirmed.  “If the money’s right, they can get Ernie Hudson.”

The check must have cleared as Hudson just filmed a scene for the all-female reboot, as have his fellow OGs Dan Aykroyd and Bill Murray. The new “Ghostbusters” starring Melissa McCarthy, Kristen Wiig, Leslie Jones and Kate McKinnon is set to debut July 2016.

TASTY UPDATE II: That feature film on young civil rights martyr Emmett Till we told you about earlier this year – that Whoopi Goldberg is helping to produce – has met its Kickstarter goal ahead of schedule. “TILL” is now casting for a lead and will begin production in early 2016.

FOODIE FILE: Clifford “Tip” Harris aka T.I. celebrated his 35th birthday with a carnivale theme at 925 Scales, the restaurant he and wife Tiny own in downtown Atlanta.

Tasty Clips got a preview of the spot a month ago as workers were busy adding a V.I.P. club section to the two-floor corner establishment that also boasts a rooftop patio.

While the grounds were being polished, we found the food in good hands with Chef Sammy Davis, a two-time winner of the Food Network’s “Chopped.”  On his last appearance on the cooking competition, Davis won with his inventiveness with goat brains.  Rest assured that item is off the menu, as is Tip’s favorite dish of grilled lobster tail and grits.

Corey Simmons and Ramone Dickerson, best known as the stars of the OWN reality series “2 Fat 2 Fly,” recently realized their dream come true. The food trucker creators of the stuffed chicken wing have opened their first brick and mortar shop called Wing City in their hometown of Columbia, S.C.

Based on the long lines out the door the last few weeks to savor their injections of mac n cheese, maple syrup waffles, jambalaya and the jalapeno-laden sucker punch, future franchises may finally be next for the enterprising partners.

TASTY QUIP: “I don’t see it as an inevitable next step. We have to be motivated. We have to recognize its value… to inspire an entire generation to study science and technology.  I worry that we’re not going to have anybody on Mars until we find oil on Mars.” – Astrophysicist NEIL deGRASSE TYSON to WSJ.com on whether the discovery of water on Mars would lead to a manned mission.
