BILL VAUGHAN’S TASTY CLIPS: Patti, Chaka, Miguel, ‘Uncle Charlie’ set to play L.A.

The Labor Day weekend kicks off Sept. 4 with an incredible number of legendary artists holding forth at local venues.  Since ladies are first, we’ll lead with Miss Patti LaBelle and Chaka Khan on an amazing bill together at the Los Angeles County Fairplex in Pomona.

On the other side of town, master guitarist and singer George Benson performs at the Hyatt Regency Newport Beach. Also that evening, hot chartbuster Miguel brings his Wildheart Tour to the Hollywood Forever Cemetery with special guest, Dorothy.

A day later, it’s back to the Fairplex for R&B icon “Uncle” Charlie Wilson’s outstanding tour.  In addition to his critically acclaimed solo CDs and numerous hits with the GAP Band, the vocalist is enjoying success these days with a memoir titled, “I Am Charlie Wilson.”

Meanwhile, at the Redondo Beach Performing Arts Center, it’s the fifth annual FlyPoet Summer Classic with Lalah Hathaway (whose forthcoming album “LIVE” will be released Oct. 5), four-time Grammy nominee Tank, Malcolm Jamal-Warner, national slam champion Sekou Andrews and other poets and artists.  Come early for the pre-show and stay late for the after party.

Monday’s Labor Day Music Festival brings the weekend to an exciting finish with Rock and Roll Hall of Famers George Clinton & Parliament Funkadelic, percussion giant Sheila E., renowned reggae group The Wailers, and the James Andrews New Orleans All Star Band featuring Cyril Neville, Leo Nocentelli, Deacon John, Stephanie Jordan and Rockin’ Dopsie.

Proceeds from Labor Day event, held at L.A. Coliseum’s Exposition Park, will benefit the Working Californians’ nonprofit focusing on social innovation and entrepreneurship, economic recovery and low-income housing.

TASTY QUIP: “There might be music that sounds like me, but what good is that? You’re essentially in the feedback loop. It’s a bad time for music in general. There’s not a lot of pop music in the mainstream that makes you feel scared, that makes you wonder what’s happening.” – PRINCE to the NY Post.

TASTY QUIP: “I was in a discussion with a friend.  He said, ‘Janelle, like you’re great.  Don’t ever forget that perfection is often the enemy of your greatness.’  Then I started to dig more.  One of my favorite players is Michael Jordan.  And I said if [he] doesn’t make a free throw, is he still Michael Jordan?  Hell yeah!” – JANELLE MONAE on BET’s “Genius Talks.”
