NORWALK — Daytime pile driving activity is underway to construct the new northbound Santa Ana (5) Freeway Carmenita Road offramp and the retaining walls at the new Excelsior/Carmenita intersection, a state Department of Transportation spokesperson said.
The work will take place weekdays between 7 a.m. and 3 p.m. for approximately two or three weeks, the spokesperson said.
The intersection of Excelsior Drive and Carmenita Road is closed temporarily, while the intersection is reconstructed to tie in with the new bridge.
Also, the northbound Carmenita Road freeway offramp has been temporarily reconfigured. Motorists who exit the northbound freeway at Carmenita will be directed to turn right on Excelsior Drive, left on Spring Avenue and left on Pumice Street to access Carmenita Road.
As a result of the traffic shift onto the new Carmenita bridge, the traffic pattern at the intersection of Firestone Boulevard and Carmenita Road has been temporarily detoured. Motorists exiting the southbound freeway at Carmenita will only be permitted to continue straight on Firestone, the spokesperson said.
The new four-lane Carmenita Bridge over the freeway at Excelsior Boulevard opened to traffic last month after the previous two-lane bridge beside it was demolished.
