Fifth-grade student Osiris Bell of Compton received a Schools That Can 2015 Robert F. Kennedy Urban Education Award May 18. While in third grade, the Laurel Street Elementary student used to struggle with reading and writing but he began to improve by showing determination along with the help of his teachers and parents, school officials said.
Brickson Diamond, CEO of Executive Leadership Council, recently was named a trustee of his alma mater, Brown University.
Diamond’s professional experience includes management, finance and sales. Previously, he was CEO of Big Answers, a consulting firm. He also is co-founder and chair of The Blackhouse Foundation, which helps provide opportunities for black filmmakers.
Darryl Newhouse is one of 22 educators in the Los Angeles Unified School District recognized as Teachers of the Year for 2015-16.
Newhouse teaches advanced placement calculus, pre-calculus, algebra, robotics and engineering design at Foshay Learning Center in South Los Angeles. He has been teaching for 23 years.
Other honorees include Chandra Sheppard of Budlong Avenue Elementary School and Chanel Thomas of Denker Avenue Elementary.
