Dominguez High School senior Amir Teixeira has received a full-ride college scholarship from the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation’s Gates Millennium Scholarship.

Each year, the foundation selects more than 1,000 students nationwide and fully funds their tuition from undergraduate to post-graduate education.

Teixeira plans to study physiological sciences at UCLA and eventually become a neurosurgeon

Single Mom Planet’s first Vision Awards honored Dr. Beverly “Bam” Crawford, CEO of Bam Crawford Ministries.

Crawford is senior pastor and founder of the Bible Enrichment Fellowship International Church in Inglewood and has written several books.

Honorees at the April 28 event also included, author Kerri Zane, television development executive Melanie Mack and studio executive N.D. Brown.

The African American Board Leadership Institute honored Robert Ross, president and CEO of the California Endowment at its second annual tribute reception May 5.

In addition to being a clinician, Ross has a background in health philanthropy and public health executive. The CEO served as director of the Health and Human Services Agency for the County of San Diego and commissioner of Public Health for Philadelphia before joining the Community Endowment.
