LaTeira Haynes, a biology instructor at Mervyn Dymally High School in South Los Angeles, is a finalist for the 2017 Educator of the Year Award given by the California League of High Schools. She was also named LAUSD’s Rookie of the Year for the 2015-16 academic year.
Haynes has a doctorate in immunology from UC San Diego, a bachelor of science in biology from Spelman College and is a member of the EnCorps Fellowship’s 2014 cohort.
The EnCorps STEM Teachers Program recruits experienced professionals and military veterans in science, technology, engineering, and math fields to teach children in disadvantaged communities.
Haynes was nominated for her award by her principal, Simone Charles.
