CHURCH DIGEST: Holman to honor Mark Ridley-Thomas

LOS ANGELES — The Holman Community Development Corporation will honor county Supervisor Mark Ridley-Thomas with its inaugural Quiet Champion Award at its fourth annual Gospel Brunch at 2 p.m. June 7 at USC Town and Gown, 655 Exposition Blvd.

The Quiet Champion Award was created to honor individuals who make “the sacrifice and contribution even when the spotlight is not on,” organizers said.

The brunch will benefit the organization’s programs including Jobs For Kids and Job Readiness Training Institute.

‘Friday Night Live’

GARDENA – City of Refuge Ministerial Alliance, 14527 S. San Pedro St., will host its first “Friday Night Live” at 4 p.m. June 7.

Gospel artist Trent Von Lee will perform praise music as Bishop Noel Jones and Dr. Sean McMillan deliver a message.

Those in attendance have an opportunity to win a free makeover, hair treatments, dinner for two, a gas card and more.

Interfaith coalition

hosts ‘Freedom Songs’

LOS ANGELES – Interfaith coalition, Justice Not Jails, will host “Freedom Songs: Reading the Bible With and For the Oppressed” from 10 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. June 13 at Ward AME Church, 1177 W. 25th St.

The event is for “everyone who longs to learn more about God’s intention to lift up the lowly, liberate the captives and tear down and destroy all structures that prevent even one of God’s children from enjoying full human dignity,” church officials said.Speakers include the Rev. James M. Lawson Jr., the Rev. Janet Wolf, Supervisor Mark Ridley-Thomas and more.
