Downey police to team with mental health clinicians

DOWNEY — The Downey Police Department will work with six other police departments in the southeast region of Los Angeles County pairing mental health clinicians with officers on patrol.

The idea is for the police officers and clinicians to work as a team, providing on-scene resources in dealing with people with mental illnesses, said Lt. Mark McDaniel of the Downey Police Department.

Two mental health clinicians from the Los Angeles County Department of Mental Health will rotate throughout the month with the seven police departments participating in the program.

The clinicians are expected to provide immediate crisis intervention and case management to individuals in need of such services.
