Alabama native James Cleveland Owens, later nicknamed “Jesse,” wins four gold medals in track and field at the international Olympics in Berlin, shattering Adolf Hitler’s Nazi theories of “Aryan supremacy” and becoming a source of racial pride for millions of black Americans.
