L.A. DIGEST: Business experts to take part in women’s conference

CARSON — Several California and U.S. elected officials will join business experts at “Connecting Women to Power Business Conference” from 8:30 a.m. to 5 p.m. June 18 at Cal State Dominguez Hills, 1000 E. Victoria St.

U.S. Rep. Janice Hahn, State Sen. Isadore Hall and Assemblywoman Autumn Burke are some of the officials scheduled to attend the conference, hosted by Board of Equalization Chair Jerome E. Horton.

Keynote speakers include Patricia Williams, owner of multiple McDonald’s restaurants, and Deborah Deras, an international speaker, author and engagement coach.

The conference connects entrepreneurs with decision makers to share strategies, techniques and opportunities for new alliances and future success, officials said.

Pop event teaches

urban gardening

SOUTH LOS ANGELES – TED speaker Ron Finley will host a one-day pop event focusing on urban gardening, “Da FUNction,” from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. June 13 at Vermont Square Library, 1201 W 48th St.

The interactive event will feature a hammock forest, gardening tips, yoga and food trucks, organizers said.

Community council

to host meeting

LOS ANGELES – The Park Mesa Heights Community Council will host its general meeting from 10 a.m. to noon June 13 at Angeles Mesa Elementary School, 2611 W. 52nd St.

Board members are encouraging stakeholders in the communities of Hyde Park, Angeles Mesa and View Heights to come get involved, stay informed and make a difference, officials said.

A light breakfast will be provided. Meetings are held on the second Saturday each month.

Free meals offered

at LAUSD schools

LOS ANGELES – Officials from the Los Angeles Unified School District announced they will begin a summer meal service program June 15 at hundreds of school sites.

The program, sponsored by the district’s Food Services Division and Beyond the Bell Branch, will offer free meals for children between the ages of 1 and 18, officials said.

Officials say the program will run until July 24, but may be extended at select schools depending on demand.

Dog clinic to be

held in Watts

WATTS – A coalition of community organizations will host a free dog clinic from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. June 14 at Watts Coffee House, 1827 at E. 103rd St.

There will be vaccinations and microchipping as well as dog trainers, prizes and veterinarians offering information on dog health, organizers said.

Officials say no appointment is necessary and walk-ins are welcome.

LOS ANGELES – Singer Michelle Williams and actor Isaiah Washington will be honored for their contributions to entertainment at “Style Africa Gala and Runway Show” at 6 p.m. June 20 at California Market Center, 110 E. 9th St.

The show, hosted by Africa Boku Talent, will feature several African designers and entertainment.

A portion of proceeds will go towards the Lalela Project, which supports creativity expression for disadvantaged youth in South Africa, officials said.
