L.A. DIGEST: L.A. Zoo offers ‘wonderland of light’

LOS ANGELES — “A Wild Wonderland of Light” will be held every night from 6 to 10 p.m. through Jan. 6 at the Los Angeles Zoo. The event features glowing animals, giant illuminated snowflakes, a disco ball forest, a whimsical herd of animated elephants, and a twinkling tunnel filled with dynamic swirls of color.

For the first time ever, the L.A. Zoo Lights experience will include picturesque Elephant Circle, which will be transformed into a kaleidoscopic savanna where glowing, large-scale animals roam. Its popular Twinkle Tunnel will double in size and feature cascading swirls of light and a spectacular finale. Other favorites are all reimagined, with stunning new visuals and music.

SOUTH LOS ANGELES — Bishop Leon and Jacqueline Martin of the Love, Peace and Happiness Family will host their annual Thanksgiving Day celebration from 11 a.m. to noon Nov. 22, at 4951 S. Figueroa St.

The mass choir and praise team will sing songs of praise and worship and testimonies of praise will be expressed followed by a message from Bishop Martin. A bottle of anointed oil will be given to all those attending the service. Information: (800) 757-6552.

SOUTH LOS ANGELES — City Councilman Curren Price will host an information session to help residents understand the ins and outs of affordable housing Nov. 26 at Maya Angelou Community High School, 300 E. 53rd St.

Those in attendance will learn how to access affordable housing in thecity, as well as the criteria individuals and families must meet to qualify.

HYDE PARK — The Hyde Park Library, 2205 W. Florence Ave., will live stream the landing of InSight, a Mars lander designed to study the interior of Mars and take the planet’s vital signs, its pulse, and temperature from 11 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. Nov. 26 at the library.

SOUTH LOS ANGELES — The annual Winter Wonderland at Vermont Square Park will be held from 4 to 8 p.m. Nov. 29 at Vermont Square Park, 1248 W. 47th St.

The celebration will feature snow slides, entertainment, music, drawings, and an arts & crafts children’s area. The first 500 people will get free food.

Holiday tree lighting

SOUTH LOS ANGELES — City Councilman Marqueece Harris-Dawson will host “South LA Glow,” a holiday tree lighting ceremony from 4 to 7 p.m. Nov. 30 at Century Boulevard and Broadway. The 35-foot holiday tree will stay lit through the end of the year for the entire community to enjoy.

INGLEWOOD — FlyPoet will host a spoken word and music showcase featuring poets from all over the country at 6 and 9 p.m. Dec. 1 at 218 S. La Brea Ave.

The event is for 21 and over with ID. Tickets are $20. Limited parking is available.
