Lincoln defeats Wilson in City baseball playoffs

MONTEREY PARK — Matthew Castro’s line drive single scored Brandon Oroxon and lifted Lincoln High School to a 2-1, walk-off victory over Northern League rival Wilson in eight innings May 19 in a first-round City Section Division II playoff game at East Los Angeles College.

The win puts the top-seeded Tigers (12-6) in a quarterfinal matchup May 22 with ninth seed West Adams (12-3), which upset No. 8 Crenshaw, 8-5.

With one out, winning pitcher Hugo Avendano got an infield single to start the rally. After Avendano was replaced by pinch runner Oroxon, Tony Ortega drew a walk to set the stage for Castro, who hit the ball to the gap in right-center.

Trailing 1-0, Lincoln tied the score in the sixth. After having a runner trying to score on a passed ball thrown out at home, Justin Garcia scored on a two-out error.

Avendano worked a complete game to earn the win, as the senior scattered seven hits, struck out five, walked two and hit two batters.

Wilson’s Danny Cerda gave up nine hits, walked four and struck out four, and took the loss. Wilson finished the season 5-14. The Mules defeated Hollywood, 5-2 in a City play-in game to set up Tuesday’s first-round game with Lincoln.

Lincoln’s home field at Rose Hills Recreation Center does not meet City Section standards for playoff games and school officials arranged to move Tuesday’s game to ELAC.

Lincoln will play West Adams May 22 at 3 p.m. at Torres High School in East Los Angeles.

In other L.A. City playoff action May 19, Hamilton defeated Garfield 6-1, in Division I play.
