BOYLE HEIGHTS — A Los Angeles man has been sentenced to three years in state prison for the hit-and-run death of a 101-year-old pedestrian in a crosswalk here last fall.
Ricardo Avalos, 41, was sentenced immediately after entering a no contest plea to one felony count of hit-and-run driving resulting in death and one misdemeanor count of vehicular manslaughter. He entered the plea as jury selection was scheduled to begin in his trial.
Avalos was behind the wheel of a van that struck Jose Noriega as he walked across Lorena Street in a marked crosswalk about 6 a.m. on Oct. 1, 2014.
Avalos fled, but witnesses followed and blocked his way — with one cutting off the van and another grabbing his keys — a short distance from the crash scene.
Noriega was taken to County-USC Medical Center, where he was pronounced dead less than two hours later.
