Open Division features top 16 teams in CIF

The CIF Southern Section is putting its top 16 boys and girls basketball teams into the new Open Division, producing some quality matchups as the playoffs open Feb. 18 for the girls and Feb. 19 for the boys.

Two area girls team were selected for the Open Division — 12th-ranked Gardena Serra, which opened Feb. 18 against fifth-ranked Sierra Canyon and 10th ranked Alhambra Mark Keppel, which opened against seventh-ranked Vista Murrietta.

Four area teams made the boys Open Division, but none are ranked higher than ninth-ranked Los Angeles Cathedral, which faces eighth-ranked Redondo Feb. 19. Other games featuring area teams are 15th-rankled Price against second-ranked Mater Dei, 14th-ranked St. John Bosco against third-ranked Sierra Canyon and 11th-rankled Montebello Cantwell-Sacred Heart of Mary versus sixth-ranked Etiwanda. All games are at 7 p.m.

In the remainder of the boys playoffs, the smaller divisions began Feb. 18, while the larger divisions open play Feb. 20.

Opening up Feb. 18 in Division 3AA were Norwalk at Northwood and Lynwood Firebaugh at home against San Marcos.

In Division 3A, Whittier Pioneer hosted Garden Grove Pacifica, Leuzinger hosted Artesia and Bellflower traveled to Corona del Mar.

In Division 4AA, Compton Centennial faced Chaminade, Salesian faced Laguna Beach and Inglewood Morningside hosted Atascadero.

In Division 4A, Santa Fe Springs St. Paul played Campbell Hall.

In Division 5AA, Windward faced Vasquez and Eagle Rock Ribet Academy faced CSDR in Division 5A.

Opening play Feb. 20 in Division 1AA are Inglewood hosting Aliso Niguel, Montebello hosting Santa Margarita, Montebello Schurr at Tustin, and Downey at San Clemente.

In Division 1A, Loyola faces Burbank and Santa Fe travels to Glendale.

In Division 2AA, Whittier hosts Eisenhower and Alhambra Mark Keppel hosts Arroyo Grande.

And in Division 2A, Lynwood hosts Lakeside and Compton travels to South Torrance.

In girls action, the smaller divisions open play Feb. 19 and the larger divisions play Feb. 21.

In Division 3AA, Norwalk travels to La Sierra.

In Division 4A, Montebello Cantwell-Sacred Heart of Mary hosts Southlands Christian and St. Paul travels to California Military.

In Division 5AA, St. Pius X-St. Matthias hosts Sacred Heart of Jesus and Downey Cavalry Chapel hosts Village Christian.

In Division 6, Los Angeles Price hosts Bethel Baptist.

In Feb. 21 games, Windward hosts Bishop Amat, Schurr hosts Fountain Valley, Downey travels to Great Oak, Lynwood hosts Diamond Bar, Whittier La Serna travels to Long Beach Millikan, Downey Warren hosts La Qunita, and Culver City hosts Quartz Hill in Division 1AA.

In Division 1A, Santa Fe travels to Burbank Burroughs and Pico Rivera El Rancho hosts Pioneer Valley.

In Division 2AA, Whittier travels to Walnut.
