WESTWOOD — UCLA hosted the Los Angeles Regional of the NCAA baseball playoffs at Jackie Robinson Field last weekend. The Bruins ended up being eliminated by Maryland, 2-1 June 1, but defeated Cal State Bakersfield twice to advance to the finals.
One of the starters on the Cal State Bakersfield team was third baseman Joey Sanchez, a sophomore from Pico Rivera’s El Rancho High School.
Sanchez managed to make the all-tournament team at third base, hitting .375 in his three tournament games with an on-base percentage of .500.
After barely playing as a freshman in 2014, Sanchez emerged this year as a key factor in the Roadrunners lineup. He ended the season as the third-leading hitter for the Roadrunners with a .311 batting average.
The Roadrunners were champions of the Western Athletic Conference this year.
