SIMPLY JESSICA: Disney Junior actress talks about her role as Doc McStuffins

Laya Hayes was 6 years old when she noticed her stuffed animal had a small split in the back. She felt sad until her dad told her he had a secret remedy that would help her stuffed animal be like new.

The remedy was simple. Her dad, Kevin, and Laya pretended to be doctors and sewed up the split on her stuffed animal.

Five years later, Laya Hayes is the voice of a 6-year-old doctor on Disney Junior. Hayes plays Doc McStuffins, a child doctor who wants to follow in her mother’s footsteps and be a doctor when she grows up. She practices medicine on her dolls and stuffed animals who come to life when she is alone.

“I really like when Doc goes into doctor mode,” Laya said. “My favorite thing she does is how she calms her patients down. She makes sure they feel ok being there.”

The 11-year-old child actress’ favorite television shows are “Phineas and Ferb” and “Once Upon a Time” because she likes how all the fairy tales come together.

Laya sees herself as having a big personality.

“I love life and having fun,” Laya said. “I love being active.”

Laya’s mother, Gina, is Filipino and her father, Kevin, is African-American. Gina, Kevin and Laya love to shop together as a family.

Laya also loves to wrestle and go-kart race with her dad and she loves riding her bike at the beach with her mom. She is quick to point out her dad is competitive.

The television doctor loves playing Nerf Wars in her downtime.

“I am similar to Doc in that we both are helpful and caring,” Laya said. “A few ways we are different is Doc is younger than me, she is personable, and she loves helping her toys.”

Laya no longer pretends to be a doctor helping her stuffed animals’ medical needs. She now spends her time raising awareness on cancer. Her grandmother died of cancer.

Laya changes the subject to a lighter tone.
