Suspect surrenders after standoff in South Gate

SOUTH GATE — A 23-year-old local man faces several felony charges after a barricade situation from about 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Aug. 24 in the10600 block of Capistrano Avenue, according to Capt. Darren Arakawa of the South Gate Police Department.

He said the barricade occurred when officers sought to arrest the man with a warrant for carjacking a vehicle earlier that day. The suspect was armed but surrendered peacefully after an eight-hour standoff. No shots were fired or tear gas used, Arakawa said.

The suspect resided at the home with his family but was the only one there at the time.

Residents of surrounding homes were evacuated for the safety of the residents and others were asked to stay away from the area, Deputy Juanita Navarro-Suarez of the Sheriff’s Information Bureau said.
