Aug. 23, 1994

Eugene Bullard, the only African-American pilot in World War I, was posthumously commissioned a second lieutenant in the U.S. Air Force. Born in Columbus, Georgia, Bullard moved to France in his teens and enlisted in the French Foreign Legion when World War I began. He was awarded the croix de guerre.
