The Rev. Martin Luther King Jr. and 60 other black activists – including Ralph Abernathy, Joseph Lowery, Fred Shuttlesworth and C.K. Steele – organized the Southern Christian Leadership Conference, a direct action organization aimed at gaining equal rights for black Americans.
