A recent report released by Next 10, an independent organization that educates and empowers Californians to improve the state’s quality of life, celebrates California as the leading state in the country in regards to developing clean energy and promoting green technology.

If California was regarded as an independent nation, it would rank among the top five in the world for energy productivity, renewable energy sources, and reductions in carbon intensity.

According to Next 10 founder F. Noel Perry, “One of the important increases in improvement we’ve seen over the years is the amount of renewable energy California is creating.”

The eighth annual edition of the California Green Innovation Index is made up of data compiled by the Los Angeles-based research firm Beacon Economics. It gives California a stellar rating for solar generation, energy, and electricity efficiencies as well as growth in clean technology investments.

According to the report, solar energy generation in California has skyrocketed over the past five years, increasing by 1,378%. Just last year, the total megawatts of solar energy in residential buildings increased 65%.

California installed more megawatts of photo-voltaic solar than any other state in the country last year. In fact, 20.1% of California’s total energy generation comes from renewable sources, which is three times the national average.

Another section of the report laid out the gross domestic product and greenhouse gas emissions per capita between 1990 and 2014, showing that during that period of time, California experienced an increase in population and economy and a 36% decrease in greenhouse gas emissions per GDP. In other words, Perry explained that the figures highlighted in the report indicate a “decoupling” between carbon emissions and the state’s economic growth.

“I think it shows you can grow the economy and reduce emissions at the same time,” Perry said.

The index also reported that California had registered more clean technology patents than any other state, including patents for energy storage, green materials, biofuels, and more.

In response, Perry said, “That tells us that California is the center for innovation related to coming up with difference products and services that can reduce greenhouse gas emissions through the creation of new companies.”

Of course, not all of the improvements in California are related to advancements in technology. Californians have proven to be dedicated to conserving energy in any way they can. A typical family in the U.S. spends about one-third of its annual heating and cooling budget on air that leaks into our out of the house through gaps and cracks. By keeping up with regular home maintenance, Californians and families across the country can reduce energy costs and work towards energy conservation as a whole.

On Wednesday, Sotheby’s attempted to auction off the largest diamond discovered in over 100 years. The tennis ball-sized rock was recovered in November from an open-pit mine in Botswana.

The diamond, at 1,109 carats, is second in size only to the “Cullinan” diamond discovered in 1905. The citizens of Botswana are calling the new diamond “Lesedi La Rona,” which translates to “Our Light.”

The diamond was valued at $70 million before the start of the auction, but after bidding failed to reach a reserve price, the mining company, Lucara Diamond Corp., announced that it would just hold onto the diamond for the time being.

Lucara is a Canadian company and a relatively small player in the industry. Yet, the same week it uncovered the Lesedi La Rona, it also found two other gigantic diamonds, including the world’s sixth largest diamond that was sold for a record-breaking $63 million during an auction in May.

While Lucara is undoubtedly making a huge profit, many people are wondering how these sales will benefit the country of Botswana.

Many parts of Africa have already suffered because of atrocious diamond industry practices. It is common knowledge that the diamond industry has been rampant with worker exploitation, government corruption, and environmental destruction in addition to severe mismanagement of revenues that have torn countries apart.

Diamond mining only recently became a lucrative venture in Botswana. In fact, it wasn’t until 1967 that diamond deposits were discovered in the region. For the longest time, no one believed that there were any natural resources available in Botswana. As a result, the government focused its efforts in developing other industries on which the economy could rely.

Fast-forward to 2016 — Botswana is now one of the biggest suppliers of rough diamonds in the world. Global diamond jewelry sales continue to increase, currently reaching more than $72 billion annually.

Unlike arrangements made in other African countries, Botswana shares joint-ownership of some of the most important mines. This setup guarantees that it receives the majority of the profits, and Botswana’s progressive taxation system requires mining companies to pay higher tax rates when they get windfalls.

This all sounds well and good for the country of Botswana, but is it sustainable? Some are concerned of what will happen when the diamond supply is depleted. With few other resources, continual economic stability may prove to be a challenge.

More than a dozen Murrieta, CA, residents awoke on Monday, June 13, to find their properties — cars, houses, and even garages — vandalized with spray-paint tags that may cost hundreds or thousands of dollars to remove.

Police Lieutenant Ron Driscoll of Murrieta said that the streak of tags appears to be an isolated incident and not the work of any gang-related activity, although the police department’s Gang Task Force has taken note of the occurrence.

Most of the vandalized targets were vehicles, some parked inside residential garages overnight. “They came inside the garage,” said resident Anne Maui, whose brand-new car was marked with spray paint. “I don’t want to crucify a kid. But I’m pretty mad.”

Residents and officials appear to assume that the vandalism was the work of a youth, since any graffiti messages were mainly random and nonsensical.

“It says, ‘boo hoo,’ and it’s not spelled correctly,” Murrieta resident Tomi McEvoy, who took pictures of the vandalism for investigators, told NBC News in Southern California. “They’ve got, ‘Hello.’ A smiley face. They put some initials.”

“It bothers me that they have no respect for this,” she continued. “That this is what they consider fun.”

Another victim, Susie Williams, had the interior and bed of her pickup truck spray-painted. “Kid pranks are one thing, but when you are damaging somebody’s property, that’s something else,” Williams said.

In addition to the many vehicles targeted, some residents found graffiti on the outsides of their homes as well. Lt. Driscoll estimated that every individual case of damage may cost anywhere from $100 to $1,200 or more to remove.

Homeowners routinely spend anywhere from 1 to 4% of a home’s value on annual maintenance and repairs, but unexpected costs like these may be more than some are ready to bear. Resident Alice Takeshita, whose side and back home walls were sprayed with paint, said that covering up the graffiti may cost “more than we have right now.”

Anyone with information concerning the vandalism attacks are encouraged to call Detective Sergeant Phil Gomez at (951) 461-6356. Those preferring to remain anonymous can call (800) 782-7463.

There’s no denying it: Americans love beef.

And even here in eco-conscious Los Angeles, carnivorous foodies can’t get enough beef, whether it’s at their favorite Korean BBQ joint, a celebrity restaurant, or just the corner deli. This June, if you’re looking for the best beef Los Angeles has to offer, then you’ll want to head to Eagle Rock.

That’s where the Oinkster is hosting its sixth annual Burger Week, seven days of gourmet burgers and sandwiches. Judging from the preview menu, this year head chef Andre Guerrero is serving up some mouth watering treats for Southern California meat eaters.

For instance, on Tuesday, June 7, the Eagle Rock eatery offered customers the “Apple Pantastic” burger, described as a ” 6-ounce Nebraska Angus beef patty topped with hickory-smoked sauce, lettuce, pickles and mayo on a seedless bun,” paired with pink lemonade. Then on Wednesday, June 8, the Oinkster will be offering something for bacon and pork lovers as well (which figures, considering the name) with the “Mr. Bahndre,” which features “House-roasted pork loin, pate, sliced ham, house-pickled daikon, carrots, cilantro, sliced jalapeno and mayo on a baguette roll.”

More so than most countries, Americans are obsessed with cows altogether. The American dairy industry is genuinely massive, while the average Los Angelino will wear an average of four leather items every day, from shoes and belts to accessories like wallets and leather handbags.

If you prefer your beef cold cut-style rather than in burger or wallet form (or if you want to stick to the Westside of town), then stop by the brand new Wexler’s Deli in Santa Monica. The famed deli just opened a second location in Santa Monica on Friday, May 27.

Wexler’s Deli is famous for its pastrami sandwiches, another popular beef dish.

According to Zagat, which blogged about the grand opening of the new location, “The new space is a perfectly updated deli: slick but not overly so, with bright mustard-yellow stools along the counter, banquettes and tables under big mirrors (do check out the little leather bags tacked to the tables… it’s for your phones, you constant Instagrammers) and a standing counter outside for everyone who needs to eat fast.”

Violence and protests have become the norm both inside and outside many Donald Trump rallies, but this time anti-Trump protesters are being accused of crossing the line.

In fact, according to social media videos from a June 2 Trump speech in San Jose, CA, crossing the line is a gross understatement. One video from NBC News correspondent Jacob Rascon shows a lone woman literally backed into a corner by a howling mob of anti-Trump protesters, who scream abuse at the woman while pelting her with eggs and trash. The woman eventually had to be rescued by the staff of a nearby hotel.

And while police looked on, reluctant to enter the fray, other protesters burned American flags and committed heinous acts of violence against Trump supporters.

There’s no doubt that Trump’s ascendance to the top of the Republican party has changed the political landscape, with his tiny, child-sized hands and penchant for petty insults, bragging, and open racism. Even so, Trump’s supporters have a First Amendment right to assembly.

It’s yet another sign that the 2016 presidential election is dominated by a single, ugly emotion: rage.

Watch: The moment a Trump supporter, surrounded by protesters, is egged in the face, hit by other food. pic.twitter.com/qYFdwJWvrS

In the Rust Belt, southern United States, and Midwest, many red state residents feel like they’ve been left behind in a globalized world, abandoned by both political parties. On the other end of the political spectrum, young liberals are struggling with massive student loans, rising costs of living, and stagnant wages. Things have gotten so desperate, fully 70% of college students said they would lie to get a job, while up to 53% of resumes now contain false information. And for those with criminal records, the situation is doubly bleak.

Back at the San Jose rally, another woman was struck by a metal parking barrier thrown by a protester. Another video shows a protester sucker punching a Trump supporter who was walking away, while yet another video shows a self-identified Trump voter covered in blood after being attacked by a mob. Throughout the day, multiple skirmishes broke out between the two sides.

According to BuzzFeed, “At least one protester, who was wearing a ‘Make America Great Again’ hat he had stolen from a rally participant, was attacked by protesters, who mistook him for a Trump supporter.

San Jose Mayor Sam Liccardo, who has backed Hillary Clinton, tried to pin the blame on Trump.

“At some point Donald Trump needs to take responsibility for the irresponsible behavior of his campaign,” Liccardo said.

Unfortunately, this time there’s plenty of blame to go around.

For the 12th year in a row, Chief Executive Magazine ranked California dead last in their annual Best and Worst States for Business survey. Meanwhile, Texas was once again named the top state, as it has been every year the survey has been conducted.

Among the subcategories in the survey, California was ranked 50th in taxation, 35th in workforce quality, and 26th in living environment. It was rated the very worst in all three categories among the nine Western states.

Some people may find this surprising as Silicon Valley remains the central hub of the tech industry. Leaders in tech such as Google and Twitter seem to be living the “California Dream” out on the West Coast, so what’s the problem?

One CEO who participated in the survey said, “California has been running businesses out of the state for years, and, in fact, their policies are getting worse. Class-action lawsuits abound, and it’s a crazy environment for small business out there.”

Business may be good for the high-tech and tourism industries; however, the state’s high taxes, regulations, and numerous other policies have reduced the quality of life and made it nearly impossible for businesses in every other industry to survive.

As many as 25% of all new businesses fail after their first year, and in California, a state known for its startup culture, failure is a devastating reality. Many small businesses are leaving California to try their luck in areas closer to the top of Chief Executive’s list — states like Arizona and Washington, which offer better economic opportunities for business owners and employees. If California wants to move up and improve their business landscape, they may need to make some serious changes.

“Over the past two decades, Los Angeles County has been a national and international leader in tobacco control and prevention.”

Or so begins a 2010 report on tobacco use from the County of Los Angeles Public Health Department. But while cities like Santa Monica, Culver City, Compton, and Pasadena have taken an aggressive approach to regulating tobacco use, especially in public places, the City of Los Angeles itself has a decidedly mixed record when it comes to tobacco regulation.

In fact, the American Lung Association’s State of Tobacco Control 2016 report gave Los Angeles an “F” grade in one important area: smoke-free housing.

Not only do the majority of market-rate, multi-unit housing complexes in the city lack policies to prohibit indoor smoking, but 40% of renters say that second-hand smoke has drifted inside their apartment over the past year. Secondhand smoke has a number of health risks, and the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development is just one of the housing authorities in the country moving to ban indoor smoking in public housing.

In a new Los Angeles Times opinion piece, Michael K. Ong with the UCLA David Geffen School of Medicine argues that it’s past time for the city to take reasonable steps to end indoor smoking in rental housing. The opinion article comes on the heels of a new law that would make California the second state in the country, after Hawaii, to raise the smoking age to 21, which advocates hope will help prevent a new generation of smokers from becoming addicted.

Currently, the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention reports that more than one-third of nonsmokers who rent are regularly exposed to secondhand smoke, bad news for the 80 million Americans living in apartment complexes.

Although secondhand smoking can causes lung cancers, currently the CDC only advises former smokers to undergo lung cancer screening. Today, CDC best practices advise that anyone over the age of 55 with a history of heavy smoking, anyone who currently smokes, and anyone who quit within the last 15 years to schedule lung cancer screening.

According to a CDC guide, “The only recommended screening test for lung cancer is low-dose computed tomography (also called a low-dose CT scan, or LDCT).” The test uses an X-ray machine to scan the body, and with low doses of radiation it can take detailed pictures of the lungs or other parts; from there, the 2D X-rays are combined into a digital 3D image that can show doctors any lung cancer indicators.

Current Los Angeles housing regulations would make it difficult to ban smoking outright, but Ong argues that it can be done with the right political will.

“Twenty years ago, it may have sounded radical to ban smoking in apartment buildings. At this point, however, it’s the next logical step for Los Angeles — the best way to protect children, seniors and all vulnerable populations in the city from inhaling secondhand smoke against their will in their own homes,” he concludes.

In what could end up being the most groundbreaking thing to happen in the world of bacterial infections since Alexander Fleming famously discovered the beginning of antibiotics, an assistant professor from Lehigh University was recently awarded a National Science Foundation CAREER grant.

According to a press release from Eurekalert.org, Angela Brown is an assistant professor of chemical and biomolecular engineering at Lehigh University. Instead of combating bacterial infections in the traditional way, which fight them head on, her research discovered that there could be an alternative way to weaken the infection and prevent the need for antibiotics altogether.

This could be a game-changing solution considering the concerns that the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) and the World Health Organization (WHO) have stated in terms of people developing resistance to antibiotics. Currently, about four out of every five Americans are prescribed some kind of antibiotic each year, and the CDC estimates that more than two million people develop antibiotic-resistant infections here each year.

“Instead of killing bacteria, we make them really uncomfortable, giving the immune system time to mount a strong response,” Brown said.

When a bacterial infection first takes hold in a person’s body, it releases things called vesicles. These essentially transport toxins into the host’s body and make the area comfortable for the bacteria to live.

In her research, Brown looked at how attacking these specific vesicles before they get a chance to establish a “base of operations” in the body could have in eliminating the ailment altogether.

The research was so unique and showed so much potential it caught the eye of the National Science Foundation. The NSF CAREER grant is a prestigious $500,000 grant that supports nontenured faculty pursuing solutions to major challenges through research and teaching. It is a five-year grant during which Brown and her team will try and develop this idea for possible application on a broad scale. Doing so could change the way bacterial infections are fought.

In addition to her research, Brown has goals and desires to move the science, technology, engineering, and math (STEM) career field in a more progressive direction by providing opportunities for women and minorities, often underrepresented in such fields.

A proposal to grant Los Angeles workers the ability to earn at least six paid sick days every year was backed by the L.A. City Council.

In late April, the City Council voted 13-1 in favor of the proposal, which doubles the mandatory minimum of California’s state paid sick law.

According to The National Law Review, the ordinance needs to be drafted by the L.A. Attorney’s Office before the approval date on July 1, 2016. If completed, an employee who works in the City of Los Angeles for over 30 days with the same company would be entitled to paid sick leave of up to six days.

A recent National Health Interview Survey reported that 75 million days of missing work can be attributed to influenza alone. The increase in paid sick days would greatly benefit employees and allow them to miss work without consequences.

“No longer will workers have to make a choice between putting food on the table and getting well,” Rusty Hicks, executive secretary-treasurer of the Los Angeles County Federation of Labor said.

The Los Angeles Times reports that some organizations are opposed to the new requirements and believe this will be a problem for more employers.

John Howland, government relations director of the Central City Association argues that the increase in worker sick days will impose “a big burden on our local businesses.”

The new law, which takes effect after July 1, would immediately affect large businesses in Los Angeles. However, companies with fewer than 25 employees would have an additional year to adhere to the new requirements.

“We need to give these small businesses some sort of reprieve,” City Councilman Paul Krekorian, said. The new law will affect more than 650,000 workers in the L.A. area.

According to the National Partnership for Women and Families, if this law does reach final approval, Los Angeles will join more than two dozen cities across the country that have mandated a minimum number of paid sick days.

L.A. workers would not receive payments for unused sick days, but that time could be carried over to the next year.

On April 28, National Holdings Corp. reached an agreement to become acquired by Fortress Biotech Inc.

Fortress Biotech is a biopharmaceutical company that develops novel pharmaceutical and biotechnology products. It has become on of the leading companies in the biopharameceutical industry.

National Holdings (NHLD) is the parent company to National Securities Corp. and vFinance Investments Inc., two independent broker-dealers.

“We have worked closely with NHLD over the years and believe strongly in the people, their overall business and in particular their unique ability to finance emerging biotech companies,” said Michael Weiss, vice chairman of Fortress Biotech and former chairman of NHLD.

Fortress Biotech is offering to purchase all of NHLDS’s shares at $3.25 per share in cash. This is a 44% premium over the closing price listed on Wednesday, April 27.

This means that the biotech giant is offering to purchase 12.44 million shares at a total of $40.4 million form NHLD. This is almost a quarter of NHLD’s annual profit, which is low compared to other independent broker-dealers in the industry.

The biopharmaceutical industry worldwide has been increasing; its total profit adds up to more than $157 billion.

The board of directors for NHLD has given its approval of the merger agreement but remains quiet on the decision of the shareholders to accept the offer. The final decision by the Financial Industry Regulatory Authority Inc. is still pending approval.

The announcement of this merger is the not the first bit of news this year from NHLD. The company announced in February that National Securities Corp. had taken part in the purchase of Lyft shares. Lyft is a fast growing car sharing service that is present in over 150 cities.

“Everyone at NHLD believes in the great potential of our Company and we believe this transformational deal will create an expanded platform that will lead to more corporate advisory business, institutional brokerage and enhance National’s overall reputation as a well-respected and valued corporate advisor,” said Robert Fagenson, CEO and Chairman of National Holdings.
