Success for the Cerritos College men’s soccer team is measured by what happens on the field and moving players to the next level.
Over the last six years, the program has been an unqualified success. Not only have the Falcons won two state championships, been runner-up on another occasion, as well as being nationally ranked, they’ve sent 39 players to four-year schools.
Make that 50 with the signing of 11 players from the current squad.
Heading the list is Cesar Castillo, an Eagle Valley, Colo. native, who has signed with Division I power UC Santa Barbara.
Castillo was a two-time first-team All-South Coast Conference selection after collecting 19 goals and 15 assists in two years.
“Cesar Castillo is one of the better players that we have recruited to UCSB,” UCSB coach Tim Vom Steeg said. “He is a two-way midfielder who can assist, score and cover the field defensively. He will compliment an already accomplished group of midfielders returning next year.”
Julio Cuevas has signed with Biola, Rene Hernandez (Warren High School) with Cal State Northridge and Christopher Rebolo (St. John Bosco) with Cal Poly San Luis Obispo. Also, the trio of Briant Reyes (Downey), Eddie Valencia (L.A. Wilson) and Carlos Ornelas have signed with Kansas Wesleyan University, an NAIA school.
The duo of Alexis Burguete (Bell) and Ruben Gonzalez (Artesia) signed with Cal State Dominguez Hills, Miguel Hernandez with Cal State L.A., Tony Serhal with Cal Poly Pomona and Julio Ceuvas (Paramount HS/Cal Poly Pomona) with Biola.
“I’m always very proud when I see our players do well and are recruited by four-year schools,” Cerritos coach Benny Artiaga said. “That’s what the community college level is here for. We’re here to help prepare them in the classroom and on the field so they are ready to make an impact with four-year schools. I think our success on and off the field shows with the amount of players we have seen move on.”
Women’s soccer
Two members of the Cerritos College women’s soccer team that advanced to the state tournament have signed with four-year schools.
Sophomore defender Janeth Arroyo (Mayfair), who was a second-team Division III All-America, has signed with Cal State Northridge, and sophomore midfielder Tatiana Cortes (La Mirada), a two-time first-team All-SCC selection along with Arroyo, has signed with Long Beach State.
Telles and Arroyo were two of the main reasons the Falcons allowed just 11 goals all season. Telles scored five goals and added four assists, while Arroyo recorded a goal and assist.
Football
Nine Cerritos College football players have signed national letters of intent.
The signees are offensive tackle Fou Fonoti with Michigan State, defensive end Eli Edwards with Washington State and free safety Keith McGill with Utah.
Others include linebacker David Lopez with Portland State, linebacker Jake Peppard with Nevada, defensive tackle Fatu Ulale with New Mexico, defensive back Tyrone Taylor with Eastern Michigan, center Jeff Houser with Benedictine (Kan.) College and long snapper Adam Frescas with Abilene Christian.
Fonoti and Lopez were All-Americans and McGill the conference defensive player of the year.
