Community calls for Skyy Fisher to resign

Compton residents and officials are enraged by the latest Fisher “antic” and are demanding his immediate removal from the school board. A group of residents demonstrated against Fisher in front of his mother’s house Monday and a parade of Compton residents spoke at a special school board meeting Monday evening demanding his removal from the body.

“He is setting a bad example to the children and making the community look bad. We’ve had enough of hm,” said one mother, whose sentiments were repeated by other residents.

Activist Najee Ali, one of the organizers of the Fisher house protest, said:

“Our protest is designed to send a message to Fisher that his sexual assault was disgraceful and he’s an embarrassment to the city of Compton. Our children deserve better role models and not a sexual deviant. We’re gong to continue to take this right to his door step.”

Former Compton City Councilwoman Barbara Calhoun told the school board: “We don’t care about his sexual preferences. We’ve known about that for years. But we need him to step aside and handle his case so the school can concentrate on educating our children — not dealing with another Fisher problem.” 

School board President Micah Ali, thoroughly agrees with that as he said: “I’ve worked diligently to ensure academic success of the students of Compton. We’ve worked to put the district’s fiscal house in order, but we still have work to do. For that reason, I’m asking Skyy Fisher to step down as a board member while the investigation into the allegations against him are completed and resolved.”

Compton Mayor Aja Brown also urged Fisher to relinquish his school board seat while he prepares to defend his legal case. “Public servants are held to a higher standard of conduct. While Skyy Fisher is innocent until proven guilty, the allegations of wrongdoing Mr. Fisher faces are serious and troubling,” the mayor said.

Uncertain as to what it could do about the continued presence of Fisher among them, the Compton school board directed Superintendent Darin Brawley to confer with legal counsel “to ascertain the board’s legal authority as it relates to addressing the matter involving Skyy Fisher.”

Fisher and his spokesperson, Jasmyne Cannick, have issued three public statements insisting that Fisher is innocent, that he “will be vindicated” and that he will not give up his seat.

Yet, the San Diego County warrant demanding Fisher’s arrest is too graphic a document to quote in a family newspaper, but clearly states that Fisher admitted to committing the crime and apologized for having done so.

In the three years Fisher has served on the school board, he faced a recall effort when city leaders and residents tried to unseat him after he used a homophobic slur in public in reference to the slain Trayvon Martin, and then used a filthy expletive in public to describe the then-Compton school superintendent, and he was arrested on suspicion of driving under the influence of something.

The resolution of that case is still pending.

Cannick declined to comment on the charges against Fisher and said the school board member had the right to remain silent.

She added that Fisher maintains his innocence and expects to be fully vindicated in the case.
