Open supervisor seats draw plenty of candidates

NORWALK — The forced retirement because of term limits of two county supervisors has resulted in a groundswell of candidates in the June 7 primary election hoping to fill those vacancies, according to the Los Angeles County Registrar of Voters office here, following the March 11 filing deadline.

A number of area elected officials are seeking higher office. Among them is U.S. Rep. Janice Hahn, D-San Pedro, who is leaving her 44th Congressional District seat to seek the Fourth District seat on the county Board of Supervisors currently held by Supervisor Don Knabe, who can’t run again because of term limits.

A number of candidates have filed to replace Hahn including State Sen. Isadore Hall III, D-San Pedro; who therefore leaves his 35th Senate District up for grabs.

In another county supervisor race, seven have filed to replace termed out Supervisor Mike Antonovich in the Fifth District.

They are Kathryn Barger, Antonovich’s chief deputy supervisor; and Elan Carr, a gang prosecutor from Granada Hills; Los Angeles City Councilman Mitch Englander, State Sen. Bob Huff, San Dimas; Rajpal Kahlon, a real estate agent from Pasadena; Billy Malone, a town council member in Altadena; Glendale Mayor Ara Najarian and Darrell Park, Pasadena, a budget specialist.

On the other hand, several area officials are unchallenged in the primary and will keep their offices following the Nov. 8 general election.

They are Assemblyman Ed Chau, D-Monterey Park, in the 49th Assembly District; Assemblywoman Cristina Garcia, D-Downey, in the 58th District; state Sen. Ricardo Lara, D-Long Beach, in the 33rd Senate District; Second District Supervisor Mark Ridley-Thomas, and District Attorney Jackie Lacey.

In the Fourth Supervisorial District, covering most of Southeast Los Angeles County and the South Bay, Hahn is opposed by Ralph Pacheco, a member of the Whittier Union High School District board; and Steve Napolitano, a Manhattan Beach city councilman and an aide to Knabe.

The supervisor office is non-partisan.

Seeking the seat vacated by Hahn in the 44th Congressional District, besides Hall, are Nanette Diaz Barragan, a Democrat and an attorney from San Pedro; Christopher Castillo, a Republican and a clerk-carpenter from Wilmington; Martha C. Delgadillo, a Democrat and nutrition manager from South Gate; Morris F. Griffin, a Democrat and Los Angeles County maintenance worker from Inglewood; Marcus C. Musante, a Democrat and an attorney from Compton; Sylvia Ortiz, a Democrat and business owner from Lynwood; and Armando Sotomayor, a Democrat and volunteer from Long Beach.

Seeking Hall’s 35th Senate District seat are Assemblyman Steven Bradford, Democrat, Gardena; Warren Furutani, Democrat, a businessman and educator, Wilmington; Isaac Calvin, Democrat, Compton City Councilman; and Charlotte Ann Svolus, Republican, a special education teacher from Torrance.

In other congressional races, Rep. Judy Chu, D-Pasadena, is unopposed for the Democratic nomination in the 27th District while Jack Orswell, a businessman from Monrovia; and Tim Sweeney, an attorney from Pasadena, are seeking the Republican nomination.

In the 34th Congressional District, incumbent Xavier Becerra, D-Los Angeles, is challenged by Adrienne N. Edwards, Democrat, a housing counselor from Los Angeles.

Scott M. Adams, an engineer from Lakewood listing no party preference, has filed in the 38th Congressional District of Rep. Linda Sanchez, D-Lakewood. Sanchez is seeking a seventh term. Also filing in the 38th is Republican Ryan Downing, an evangelical from Whittier.

In the 40th Congressional District, Rep. Lucille Roybal-Allard, D-Commerce, is seeking re-election. Also filing was Roman G. Gonzalez, a student listing no party preference from Downey.

Area Assembly races include the 57th Assembly District where the incumbent, Ian Calderon, D-Whittier; faces Republican Rita Topilian, also of Whittier, in a rematch of 2014.

In the 63rd Assembly district incumbent Anthony Rendon, D-South Gate, recently installed as Assembly speaker; faces Republican Adams J. Miller of Lakewood, a documentary producer.

In state legislative and congressional races, the top two candidates in each race, regardless of party affiliation, will face off in the November general election.

In county races, a runoff will take place in November if no candidate receives more than 50 percent of the vote.
